Year 7 have been studying The Famine in Ireland as part of their WAU topic and also reading the first book in the Children of the Famine trilogy by Marita Conlon McKenna entitled "Under the Hawthorn Tree".
In Literacy , the pupils have been exploring how to show empathy with the characters by writing diary extracts from varying perspectives, both adults and children.
As an Art activity, children have been learning about a local Northern Irish artist J.P Rooney and have recreated his cottage scenes using oil pastels. Altogether their written diary extracts and artistic landscapes have produced a vividly heart-warming yet authentic glimpse into life in rural Ireland during this difficult time.
