Safety Solutions for Year 5
As part of the thematic Unit Lights and Sparks Leonie from Northern Ireland Electricity Kidzsafe initiative visited the Year 5 pupils. The pupils learned how to be safe around electrical devices. Leonie discussed with the pupils the benefits of electricity but also how dangerous electricity can be. She emphasised 3 facts about electricity- You can’t see it, you can’t hear it and electricity can jump gaps.The pupils also were informed on the safe handling of electrical devices, avoiding overloading outlets, and the importance of turning off appliances when not in use. Leonie stressed the importance of avoiding playing near overhead power lines especially with footballs and kites.The Deputy Mayor Breanainn Lyness joined the pupils and Leonie during the workshop.
Year 5 continued their learning about staying safe when Northern Ireland Fire Service visited St. Colmcille’s to get the fire safety message across in a fun and effective way. The Fire Service Safety Team told the pupils about the fire hazards in different areas in the house and the importance of having a working fire alarm in the home. They encouraged the pupils to be think of an escape route in the event of a fire at home.
These two workshops showed the Year 5 pupils the importance of electrical and fire safety, equipping them with the knowledge to protect themselves and others.
