Peter Connon, an accountant, paid a special visit to the Year 4 pupils to demonstrate how maths plays a crucial role in his job, helping solve important problems. He explained that his work revolves around using maths to help individuals and organisations maintain their financial records accurately. He emphasised that basic maths skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, are essential when dealing with financial transactions and calculations.
To make things engaging, Peter used a practical example involving a shopkeeper named Alanna. Alanna sought help from her accountant friend, Emma, to manage her finances. Peter illustrated how Alanna shops for products at lower prices and then sells them in her store at higher prices. He even used physical money as a visual aid to illustrate how Alanna's maths skills helped her make a profit.
At the end of his talk, Peter tested the pupils to check their understanding. Some fortunate pupils received rewards like pens for their active participation. The pupils were delighted to have Peter visit during Maths Week, and it provided a fantastic opportunity for them to see how math is applied in real-world situations. Alanna, his daughter particularly enjoyed it!
