Michael Morpurgo- The Great Wave!
Year 6 pupils are currently reading the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Kensuke’s Kingdom tells the story of a boy named Michael, whose family decide to sail around the world after his parents are made redundant from the local brickworks. Initially their voyage goes well until the weather becomes perilous. At this point, Michael’s dog falls overboard in the Indian Ocean and Michael tries to retrieve her. However, a ‘great’ wave takes hold of the yacht causing both Michael and Stella to fall overboard.
In Art pupils have recreated the image of the ‘Great Wave’ inspired by the Japanese artist Hokusai and in Literacy they have written expressive poems taking on the role of Michael at sea. They used a wide range of descriptive language, similes, alliteration, metaphors, rhetorical questions and personification.
