We are learning all about castles in our World Around Us topic ‘Towers and Turrets’. Did you know Ballymena used to have a castle? We went for a walk looking for signs of the castle. We found lots of clues. Can you find Castle Street and St. Patrick’s Church in our photos? The gates there used to be the old entrance to the castle. We recognised some features of castles like the arrow slits and battlements at the church too. Outside the swimming pool we discovered a large stone with a plaque which showed us the site where Ballymena Castle once stood. It is no longer here today because of a fire in 1955. It was great fun exploring our town on a lovely sunny morning!
